Brittle Star Fossil
Multi Ophiura wetherelli specimen from Italy
Up for auction here is a superb multi Brittle Star assemlage from the Eocene of Tuscany, Italy (approx. 45,000,000 years old). An exceptionally rare piece with 7 specimens on a single plate, with several other species. A good solid slab measuring 11.5″ x 10″ x 2.5″. As the photos show, wonderful preservation and detail throughout. (Please conact us if you require any more pictures).
We acquired 2 collections of fossils a short while ago and amongst them were some choice material which we are now listing here on eBay… I have never seen another fossil like this on Ebay before!
Brittle stars are echinoderms, possessing a skeleton of Calcium carbonate (calcite), allowing for spectacularly accurate preservation during fossilization. Their hard outer skeleton aided their habitation of very deep water, often in excess of 500m… More information on these fascnating ancient creatures can be found here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brittle_star

Coeloma Crab Fossil
Complete nodule from Lyby, Denmark
Here is an exceptionally detailed crab nodule from Lyby, Denmark. 100% genuine, with fantastic preservation throughout. The nodule measures 2.7″ x 2.5″ x 2.3″, with crab measuring 2.5″ x 1.5″ across. Dating from the Oligocene Epoch, this is not to be confused with modern incarnations…This is partly due to the softness of the matrix which is broken during collecting as a matter of course, when the nodules are split to reach the fossil (however 9/10 nodules are found to be barren)… As a result, the nodules must be painstakingly put back together. If everything is done right, it looks like this one! This is a very rare piece indeed. All in all, a stunningly intricate piece of the highest quality.

ORDER: Pycnodontiformes
GENUS: Coccodus
SPECIES: insignis
AGE: Middle Cretaceous, Cenomanian Stage (95 mya)
FOUND: Hajoula, Lebanon
MATRIX: 7.5″ x 4.25″ x ¼” thick and 7″ x 4-1/8″ x 5/8″ thick
SPECIMEN LENGTH: 5-1/8 inches
WEIGHT: 1.25 pounds each slab / 3.5 pounds shipping
EONS: L78 MUSEUM QUALITY COCCODUS w/TEETH, CHOICE OF ONE PLATE!
DESCRIPTION: Coccodus, often called a crusher fish or bat fish, had rounded peg-like teeth that were used to crush its mollusk and crustacean prey. This specimen is extremely desirable because its shiny teeth are clearly visible, the texture of the fins is superbly conserved, and the rarely preserved cartilaginous ribs and vertebrae are preserved as well. There has been no restoration, and no tint added to this specimen. And like virtually all sizable slabs from this formation it has been repaired due to excavation fracturing. This is an unusual genus which makes for a showy and impressive display fossil; and truth be told, Coccodus is my favorite genus from Lebanon.
Up for bid is EITHER the positive or the negative slab as shown.
THE WINNER WILL SELECT ONE OF THE SLABS FOR THE WINNING BID AMOUNT.
NO NEED TO EMAIL ME NOW. AFTER YOU WIN, JUST TELL ME WHICH SLAB THAT YOU WANT.
The slabs were trimmed to different sizes because of excavation breaks, but these are indeed the pos/neg slabs of one Coccodus.
COMPARABLES: Here’s a slightly larger single-slab specimen for $1,935 (equivalent), a smaller less preserved single-slab specimen for $600, and a decently-preserved albeit smaller single-slab specimen for $495. I found only one other pos/neg pair on the internet (it is 40% smaller), but alas the author is playing the “not for sale” game, so there was no price shown.
