Both ammonites measure 3.7″ inches (9.2cm) at their widest points and are exposed on one side of the 10.5″x 6.3″ inch wide shale matrix, the neutral grey colour providing a perfect ground to highlight the dramatic aesthetic contrast of the fossils.

The shimmering iridescent colours are the result of light refracting through and rebounding from thin platelets of aragonite & Conchiolin the primary constituents of the ammonite’s shell formed through millions of years of compression and mineralisation.

The small ammonite pictured below measures 0.8″ (2cm) and is on the reverse of this piece.
