Protoleptostrophia perplana

LOT OF 2 FRAGILE AND DELICATE SILICA FORMATION BRACHIOPODS (ACTUALLY 1 AND A HALF) FROM THE MIDDLE DEVONIAN OF SYLVANIA, OHIO.   ONE IS A PEDICLE VALVE ONLY WHICH EXIBITS MUSCLE SCARS IN A FAINT PURPLE FROM IT’S INTERNAL LOPOPHORE (OR BREATHING/FEEDING ORGAN) ATTACHMENT!  THIS ORGAN IS SHOWN IN THE PHOTO BELOW AS IT WOULD HAVE APPEARED WHILE ALIVE.  THE UNIQUE THING ABOUT THESE ARE THAT THEY ARE SO THIN, YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE THROUGH THEM WHEN BACKLIT, AND VIEW THAT SAME BREATHING/FEEDING APPARATUS TRAPPED INSIDE (GALLERY PHOTO).

THE GENUS-SPECIES OF THIS BRACHIOPOD IS ONE OF THE LONGEST NAMES OUT THERE:

THESE SPECIMENS ARE BETWEEN 350 AND 400 MILLION YEARS OLD, SIZES ARE BOTH 1-1/2 INCH ACROSS AND LESS THAN AN EIGTH OF AN INCH THICK.
